How an SEO Agency Can Add AI Visibility Tracking as a Service
Clients are already asking how they look in ChatGPT. Turning that question into a billable service takes a tracked question set, a monthly report, and an honest answer about timelines.
How an SEO Agency Can Add AI Visibility...
TL;DR
Sell it as a monitored retainer, not a one-off audit. Pick 30 to 50 real buying questions per client, track them across the models their buyers use, and report monthly on mentions, competitors and cited sources. Price it as an add-on to existing SEO retainers. Renown runs the tracking so you sell the strategy, not the plumbing.
Why clients are asking
The question arrives the same way every time. A client googles their own category, sees an AI summary that names three competitors and not them, and forwards it to you.
You need an answer that is better than "we're looking into it". That is the whole commercial opening.
What the service actually is
Four things, in order.
A tracked question set. Thirty to fifty questions a real buyer would ask, in their words. Discovery questions, comparison questions, problem questions. Not keywords. Questions. Regular measurement across the models that matter. Whether the client is named, where they appear relative to competitors, what AI says about them, and which sources it read to decide. A diagnosis. Not the score. The reason for the score. Most clients who score zero are missing from the third-party sources their category's answers get drawn from, and that points to a completely different work programme than a content problem does. A work plan you bill for. The measurement is the wedge. The remediation is the retainer. What to charge
Two models work.
Add-on line item. Fold it into an existing SEO retainer as a monitoring and reporting line. Lowest friction, since it does not require a new budget approval. Good for keeping accounts that are questioning classic SEO spend. Standalone AEO retainer. Measurement plus a monthly work programme against what the measurement found. Higher value, and it needs you to be genuinely confident about the diagnosis.Either way, your cost floor is per-client tool cost, and your margin is the strategy and execution on top. Do not sell the dashboard. Clients can buy a dashboard. Sell the reading of it.
The reporting rhythm that keeps clients
Monthly, three sections, one page each.
Where you stand. Mentions across the tracked questions, versus competitors, versus last month. One number the client can repeat to their board. What changed and why. The interesting part. A competitor entered the answer set. A roundup started getting cited. A source that used to name them stopped. What we are doing about it. Three actions, in priority order, with the reason each one is on the list.Send it the same week every month. Predictability is most of what a retainer buys.
The conversation you must get right
At some point you will report a zero, and the client will ask how long until it moves.
Tell the truth. Verification fixes, where AI knows the brand but cannot confirm details, can move in days because they only need a re-crawl. Getting into the third-party sources that decide unbranded answers takes weeks to months, because it depends on other people publishing and those pages being re-read.
Agencies that promise a month lose the account in month two. Agencies that explain the mechanism up front get a longer runway than they expected, because the client can see the work is real.
The useful framing: the score is a lagging indicator. The leading indicators are how many target sources now mention the client, and how many of the questions have moved from no mention to any mention at all. Report those and the wait is legible.
Running it across a roster
Three things break at scale.
Setup time per client. If onboarding takes a day of manual question-writing, twenty clients is a month of unbillable work. Generating the question set from the client's domain is the difference between a service and a hobby. Report assembly. Rebuilding a deck by hand each month for each client does not survive contact with a roster. Export and template. Keeping the questions honest. The temptation is to track questions the client already wins. Resist it. A report that only measures easy questions is a report that tells the client nothing, and they will eventually find out.Renown handles the multi-client side: one account holds every client brand, tracked models and question counts are set per client, and onboarding a new one is a domain paste. FAQ
Do I need to be an AEO specialist to sell this?
No. The measurement is the specialist part and a tool does it. What you need is the ability to read a diagnosis and turn it into a work plan, which is the same skill classic SEO already requires.
How is this different from the SEO reporting I already do?
Different surface, different unit. Classic SEO measures where a page ranks in a list of links. This measures whether a brand gets named in a generated answer, and which sources the model read to decide. A client can rank first for a keyword and be absent from the AI answer above it.
What do I do when a client's score is zero and stays zero?
Report the leading indicators instead. Third-party sources that now mention them, questions that moved from zero mentions to any, verification gaps closed. If none of those are moving either, the work plan is wrong, and that is worth finding out in month two rather than month six.
Can I white-label the reporting?
White-label client reporting comes with an agency or Enterprise account and is set up with the account team. Data export to CSV is available on any paid plan.
How many questions should I track per client?
Thirty is enough to be representative for a focused business. Fifty gives you room for several buyer segments. Beyond that you mostly add noise, and each individual win moves the score less.
