How to Find the Sources ChatGPT Uses to Answer Questions About Your Category

ChatGPT does not answer category questions from memory. It runs a search, reads a handful of pages, and writes from those. Find those pages and you have found the real target.

Find the Sources ChatGPT Uses to Answer...

TL;DR

Ask ChatGPT the question your buyers ask, then read the citations under its answer. Those pages are the sources it used. Collect them across every buying question, count which domains repeat, and you have the list that decides whether you get recommended. Renown does this on a schedule and tracks the list over time.

ChatGPT is not remembering. It is reading.

When someone asks "what's the best tool for X", ChatGPT with search does not recall an answer. It runs a web search, opens a handful of results, and writes a summary of what it just read.

That means the answer is decided by a small set of pages. Usually five to ten. If your brand is not on those pages, you are not in the answer, and no amount of rewriting your own homepage changes that.

So the useful question is not "how do I rank". It is "which pages is it reading, and am I on them".

The manual version, in ten minutes

You can do this by hand for one question right now.

  1. Open ChatGPT with search enabled.
  2. Ask the question exactly the way a buyer would. Not "tell me about Renown" but "what are the best AI visibility tools". A question with your brand name in it teaches you nothing, because you have already handed it the answer.
  3. Look at the citation links under the response. Those are the sources.
  4. Write down every domain.
  5. Repeat for the next question.

After ten questions you will see the same eight or ten domains again and again. That repetition is the finding.

What you will probably see

Across the AI-visibility category we track, 3,413 captured citations resolved to 864 distinct domains. The distribution was not even. A small number of domains did most of the work, and they were rarely the vendors themselves.

Three patterns hold up across categories:

Roundups decide product questions. For "best X" questions, the answer is usually a rewrite of two or three listicles. Whoever is in those listicles is in the answer. Community pages carry more weight than their design suggests. Reddit threads and YouTube tutorials show up constantly, because they read as real people describing real use. Your own site is cited mostly when you are already named. It confirms what the model found elsewhere. It rarely introduces you.

Doing it properly

The manual version tells you about one question on one day. That is enough to prove the point and not enough to act on, for three reasons.

Answers move. Ask the same question a week apart and the sources change. A single check cannot tell you what is a stable source and what was noise.

Coverage matters more than depth. One question is not your category. Real buying behaviour spreads across discovery questions, comparisons, and problem questions, and the sources differ for each.

Engines disagree. The pages ChatGPT reads are not the pages Google AI Overviews reads. Optimising for one tells you little about the other.

This is what Renown automates. It asks your category's real buying questions across the models your buyers use, captures every citation, and tracks which domains keep deciding your answers. See what sources AI actually trusts for the pattern across categories, and how ChatGPT decides which brands to recommend for the mechanism behind it.

What to do with the list

Once you have the repeating domains, the work stops being guesswork.

Sort them into three buckets. Sources that mention you. Sources that mention competitors but not you. Sources that mention nobody in your category yet.

The middle bucket is the whole game. A roundup that already ranks, already gets cited, and already lists four of your competitors is the cheapest position you will ever buy. Getting added to it is an email, not a content programme.

The third bucket is where you can be first.

The first bucket you protect. Check the facts are current, because a stale page about you is worse than no page.

FAQ

How many sources does ChatGPT actually use per answer?

Usually five to ten pages for a category question, though it varies by how specific the question is. Narrow questions pull fewer sources, which makes them easier to influence.

Do the citations shown in ChatGPT tell the whole story?

No. They tell you what it read this time. Training data still shapes which brands it considers plausible before it searches, which is why a brand can be absent from the sources and still get named. Tracking citations over time separates the two.

Because a branded query hands the model your name and it goes looking for you. An unbranded query makes it choose, and it chooses from third-party sources. This gap is the single most common finding when brands start measuring.

Is this the same as tracking keywords?

No. Keywords tell you what people type into a search box. This tells you which pages an AI reads before it answers, which is a much shorter list and a much more direct target.

How often should I check?

Weekly is enough to spot a source becoming dominant. Daily matters if you are actively working on getting into a specific roundup and want to know when it starts affecting answers.
