Prompt Visibility
How often your brand appears in AI responses to specific prompts or queries. A core metric in AI visibility tracking that measures brand presence at the query level.
Prompt Visibility
Prompt visibility measures whether your brand shows up when someone asks AI a specific question. It's AI visibility at the query level."Best CRM for startups." "Top cybersecurity tools." "What email platform should a small business use?" Each of these is a prompt. Your prompt visibility is the percentage of times AI mentions you in response to the prompts that matter to your business.
How It's Measured
Pick the prompts your customers are likely to ask. Run them across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Record whether your brand appears. Do this repeatedly over time.
Here's a concrete example. A marketing analytics company identifies 30 high-value prompts like "best marketing analytics tools," "how to measure campaign ROI," and "alternatives to Google Analytics." They run these prompts weekly across four AI platforms. That's 120 data points per week. If their brand appears in 45 of those responses, their prompt visibility is 37.5%.
That number means something. It's specific. It's measurable. And it can be tracked week over week to see if your efforts are working.
Why Query-Level Tracking Matters
Aggregate metrics hide important details. Your overall AI visibility might look decent, but the breakdown tells the real story. Maybe you show up for 80% of product-specific queries but 0% of category-level queries. Maybe ChatGPT mentions you consistently but Claude never does.
Prompt visibility lets you see exactly where you're strong and where you're invisible. That specificity turns vague "improve our AI presence" goals into concrete "we need to appear in these 12 queries where we're currently missing" action items.
Different prompts also reveal different competitive landscapes. For "best project management software," you might be competing against Asana, Monday, and ClickUp. For "project management for remote teams," the competitive set could be entirely different. Understanding visibility at the prompt level shows you who you're actually competing against for each use case.
What Influences Prompt Visibility
AI decides what to mention based on its training data and retrieval sources. For a specific prompt, the factors include how often your brand is associated with that topic across the web, whether authoritative sources mention you in that context, and how clearly your own content addresses that specific question.
A brand can have high prompt visibility for "enterprise data warehouse solutions" and zero visibility for "best data tools for startups" even though both are relevant. The web content, reviews, and discussions that AI draws from might position you strongly in one context but not the other.
Improving Your Numbers
Start with the prompts where you should appear but don't. These are the gaps with the highest potential return. Run a citation gap analysis to find out which sources AI is citing for your competitors on those queries.
Then create or improve content that directly addresses those prompts. Get mentioned on the sources AI trusts for that topic. If AI cites G2 for "best CRM" queries and you have a weak G2 presence, that's your fix.
Track prompt visibility over time. AI responses aren't static. Models update, retrieval indexes change, and new content gets incorporated. The brand mention rate for a given prompt can shift in either direction without warning. Regular monitoring catches those shifts before they become revenue problems.
